About Roof Insulation

Published: August 5, 2010

In most buildings, a quarter of the internal heat is lost through the roof, and roof insulation can help to retain this heat. The best roof insulation options, in terms of thermal resistance (R-value, the higher the material’s R-value, the cooler the building will stay in summer and the warmer in winter), are polystyrene and polyurethane foam roof insulation.

While the roof insulation material forms the bulk of any roofing insulation job, it is essential to use a protective product too. There are other roofing insulation options available, such as cellulose fibers, fiberglass, and reflective foil roof insulation. These will be discussed briefly, as will the best insulation material to use for different roof types.

Roof Insulation Materials

These materials are available from a manufacturer, supplier or roofing company. There are diy kits available but it is best to get a contractor to install the roof installation for you. Some of the installation materials available will now be discussed.

  • Polyurethane Foam: a very strong, rigid material, that comes in the form of a spray, that is easy to install. It is applied as a liquid and sets across the roof as a single film sheet. It very effectively allows your house to stay well ventilated, cool off in summer and retain heat in winter (R-value). It has a higher R-value than fiberglass, and requires little to no maintenance, lasting longer than other roof insulation materials.
  • Polystyrene: A lightweight (which makes it easy to handle and apply), strong, economical and waterproof material. It is very durable and can be reused, which can save costs at a later stage. Its downfalls lie in the fact that it is poisonous if ingested by animals or people, and doesn’t break down easily.
  • Cellulose Fiber: An eco-friendly option of roof insulation, made from organic and recycled materials (for example cardboard). It has a lower R-value than foam, but is becoming increasingly popular as people become more environmentally aware.
  • Fiberglass: Consists of fine glass strands (fibers), with small pockets of air between each fiber, which are held together in a thick mat. It is available in different R-values depending on your needs. Its R-value is acceptable, but not as good as foam and polystyrene.
  • Reflective Foil: Thin sheets of plastic film, that are coated with reflective aluminium foil. It has a good R-value, and will insulate in winter, but works the best in summer.

Choosing The Right Material For You

You should install certain types of roofing insulation materials on certain types of roofs, in order to achieve optimal insulation results. Flat and pitched roofs will be discussed, as well as information on roof insulation in an attic or loft.

  • Flat Roofs: It is best to use polyurethane foam insulation for flat roof insulation, as it the most energy-efficient and waterproof option available for conventional flat roofs. Insulation of a flat roof (for commercial buildings or homes) has to be installed right in order to have the right balance of ventilation and insulation. • Pitched Roofs: Polyurethane foam is the best insulation material to use, as it provides brilliant insulation and is quick and easy to install.
  • Attic: To cool your attic, you can install reflective foil between your roof and your attic insulation. Attic roof insulation can save you a lot in cooling the interior of a building in summer.
  • Loft: Insulating your loft will result in the roof void cooling, and this will possibly cause condensation. Use flexible mastic to seal around pipes and wiring in the loft. Check that there is enough ventilation. It is best to use a contractor to do the insulation for you.
