Different Water-proofing Systems

Published: August 10, 2011

Roof waterproofing is so diverse. There are many methods used in water-proofing. The three main methods are combination, interior and exterior water-proofing systems. All these methods are used and needed because each home or project has specific needs and sometimes need all these methods. Not many companies however, provide all three methods. Most of them usually specialise in the interior water proofing system. There are of course those that offer all three methods and can easily evaluate problem and provide the best solution.

Water-proofing Systems

Interior waterproofing is a process that involves prepping the inside of the basement by laying a protective layer of carpet over your existing flooring. This helps by protecting your finish and keeping your home clean. Plastic will also be used to cover your items in the basement and an exhaust fan will be put in place to minimize dust. After the prepping, the floors are opened up about 12 inches out from the wall. Then it gets trenched out alongside the footing about 7 inches below the floor. The trench is shaved down 1 inch every 10 feet. Then the material is hauled out of the basement using 5 gallon buckets. A soil separator is placed in the trench along with a perforated pipe covered with 1 inch river washed gravel. The floors are washed and cleaned and then a vapour barrier is placed over the gravel and then the concrete floor is re-poured. The drain tile is then taken to the outside using a pump or gravity which is decided by the according to preference.

With the exterior waterproofing system you must first the trench is opened on the exterior walls at multiple depths; varying between 12” to 48”. All this depends on the problem which is at hand. An inspection is done on the wall for any cracks and all cracks found are repaired. Tar is applied by hand on the wall that is exposed. About 6 mil plastic lines the bottom of the trench and a drainage mat is secured onto the wall in order to prevent water from being in contact with the wall. Filter fabric also lines the trench and a tile perforated about 4” is put at the bottom of the trench. Gravel is put inside the trench until the pipe is covered for about 12” and then it is covered with the filter fabric. After that a ground-pounder tamps the soil until there is no soil settling or dirt left in the yard. Then is the cleaning process which is done through pressure washing. Exterior water proofing systems also come with a lifetime guarantee.

The combination water proofing system basically combines the exterior and interiors or even the excavation and interior systems. These combinations are used depending on the problem at hand and the service required. Some suppliers offer these systems with a lifetime warranty.
