Metal Shed Roof Waterproofing
All roofs need waterproofing. This helps provide your roof with protection which in turn will save you a lot of money. One particular roof waterproofing that you can do is for your shed. When waterproofing your metal shed, it provides it with two types of protection. It provides sealing and painting. This way you will be able to protect you metal roof shed.
When To Waterproof Your Roof
Metal roof sheds should be waterproofed at least three or four months after you have installed them. This is because they usually come with coatings such as moisture repellents and moisture resistant oils which help protect the roof and provide protection from the weather. These protective compounds will gradually wear off and it is only then that you should waterproof your roof. Try not to wait longer than four months as moisture may seep under the surface of the roof. This leads to internal corrosion which may damage your metal roof.
How To Waterproof Your Metal Shed Roof
You will need water, roof paint, caulking, caulking gun, paint roller, ladder, and a broom. Make sure that you do your waterproofing on a day that is dry and not raining. This is because the best way to waterproof your roof is in one day, so bad weather will disrupt the process. Also avoid doing it on a humid day as moisture might seep under the applied coating which could affect the effectiveness of the waterproofing. Dry weather conditions will also help by drying the caulking more quickly. Use a ladder to get to the roof and clean it first. Make sure that you remove any dirt and debris on the roof as it will affect the bonding of the caulking on the roof.
Then check if the roof has any holes and you can even pour water on the surface to be able to see any leaks. When there are bubbles then there is a hidden fissure and the caulking will seal all of these holes. Make sure that your caulking is silicone so that the seal is sturdy and resistant to moisture. You can easily seal all of the holes using a caulking gun. The metal roofing seams need to be waterproofed with caulk since they are so hard to repair. Also make sure that you apply the silicone caulk along screws and nail fasteners on the roof as these areas of the roof can be easily corroded. Leave the roof for a while before painting it.
Make sure that you get a roofing paint that is specifically for waterproofing. Metal roof paints contain acrylic particles in a suspension form and these particles can bond with the roof surface forming a water-proof layer. Excessive dilution of the paint can compromise the water-resistance of the applied coatings so blend the roofing paint and the primer according to packaged instructions. Apply the first coating of the waterproofing paint using the paint-roller. Start along the upper edge of the metal roof and move towards the lower end. Apply another coat of paint then allow it to dry for about a day.
